March 3 Advocacy Update focused on hunger; two sessions remain.

The Christian Advocacy Committee welcomed Dr. Valerie Hawthorne, Director of Government Affairs for the North Texas Food Bank, to an Advocacy Update Zoom session on Wednesday, March 3. Hawthorne shared the following policy goals for this legislative session. NTFB will be sponsoring upcoming Advocacy Days to highlight each of these initiatives.

• Strengthen Texas Seniors’ ability to access the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by simplifying the application forms and through other proven best practices.
• Support, protect and increase funding for the Surplus Agriculture Product Grant Program in the Texas State Budget.
• Prevent decreases in Texas’s SNAP participation and enrollment due to strict work requirements.
• Protect Texans’ access to SNAP by supporting helpful legislation and opposing harmful legislation.
