Hunger Action Month: Ideas for action

by | Sep 25, 2026 | Missions and Advocacy, Tapestry News

There are so many ways you can participate in meeting the needs of those in our community who are food insecure. Whether you do that here with us at Wilshire or find a closer or more convenient time for you and your family, the opportunities are there. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

• Volunteer with Meals on Wheels. They deliver hot, nutritious meals to homebound seniors. You can choose a route at a time that works for your schedule. Bonus: Kids can help.

• Call the counselor at the public school in your neighborhood. Most schools have pantries that are always in need of stocking. Start a drive and get your neighbors to pitch in.

• Schedule a time at the North Texas Food Bank and learn more about food banking and how they operate and distribute food. Sign up for their advocacy newsletter and stay informed of ways you can use your voice to make a difference.

Ways to serve through Wilshire:

• A Wilshire group serves the fourth Friday morning each month at the Vickery Meadow Youth Development Foundation Mobile Food Pantry. Contact: Charlie Estee (cesteedallas@gmail.com)

• Wilshire volunteers serve as food pantry assistants at the Wilkinson Center the third Tuesday afternoon each month. Contact: Cindy Estee (cesteedallas@aol.com)

• Wilshire volunteers serve lunch at the  Stewpot the second Thursday every month. Contact: David Cossum (dc@cossum.com)
