Each morning, I try to read John O’Donohue’s “Blessing for Solitude.” It is a blessing I often share with those who come into my office because I believe we all need words like these spoken over our lives.
The word blessing can be a strange one for some of us, or perhaps I should speak for myself. Much like the word love, it is often overused and taken out of context. Blessing is not about the Prosperity Gospel. Rather, it is about turning toward our calling and recognizing the image of God in which we are all created and of which we each bear a part.
When God blesses Abraham, the blessing is spoken as words over his life, words that equip him for the future. They give him a vision to see what lies ahead and to see anew.
What words do we need to help turn us back toward God, our calling and a renewed vision? What words do we need spoken over our lives that feel like holy oil poured over our heads, anointing us for the life ahead and for the life we have in Christ?
What blessing do you need today?
As you come into this place, may the words of the songs, prayers, Scriptures and preached Word become a blessing over your life. May they turn your heart toward God, renew your vision and remind you of the calling that rests upon your life.
Receive this blessing, my friends:
May you recognize in your life the presence, power and light of your soul.
May you realize that you are never alone, that your soul in its brightness and belonging connects you intimately with the rhythm of the universe.
May you have respect for your own individuality and difference.
May you realize that the shape of your soul is unique, that you have a special destiny here, that behind the facade of your life there is something beautiful and eternal happening.
May you learn to see yourself with the same delight, pride and expectation with which God sees you in every moment.
