About the retreat:

Cliches. We’ve all heard them. We’ve all probably used them at one time or another. They aren’t necessarily bad and in some cases can be helpful, but often their overuse is accompanied with a loss of effectiveness. Cliches are used to try to communicate a potentially complicated truth in a simple, approachable way. While this is an admirable idea, cliches miss the mark by oversimplifying things, which becomes their weakness.

This can be especially true when it comes to matters of faith. Phrases like “everything happens for a reason,” “God has a plan,” or “the Bible has all the answers” are sometimes used in an effort to try to help make sense of complex truths, which generally comes from a good place. But these cliches, even though they may be intended to be helpful, may actually cause more problems than they solve.

At the year’s WSM Fall Retreat our youth will be engaging with some of these well-worn cliches in an attempt to understand why they get used, what feels good or bad about them, what they communicate about God and how these cliches potentially raise more questions than answers.

Mix in a campfire, some games and chance to hang out with friends and you’ve got a great weekend that should not be missed.
