Wilshire STUDENT Ministry

A collection of pilgrims, ragamuffins & other peculiar treasures.

Wilshire Student Ministry is a community within a community. A place where 6th through 12th graders are reminded that they are uniquely created in God’s image and worthy of love. Through discussion, music, service, travel and plenty of fun and hanging out, Wilshire helps teens journey through the “no longer but not yet” part of life, when they’re no longer a child, but not yet who they will be as an adult. Wilshire’s youth group has been led since 1998 by Associate Pastor Darren DeMent.

SUNDAYS

Sunday School & Worship

On Sunday mornings, youth gather for Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. in the Youth Center, starting all together and then splitting into smaller groups by grade. We continue to build community by sitting together in the first few rows of the Sanctuary during worship.

SUNDAYS

Youth Choir

Youth Choir is open to all 6th through 12th graders. No audition required. Rehearsals take place on Sundays from 12:20 to 1:15 p.m. after a quick snack lunch. Directed by Minister of Music Ariel Merivil, the Youth Choir sings during worship services throughout the year. High school students can audition for Shekinah, a smaller choral ensemble that rehearses right after the larger group.

In its annual summer Mission Tour, the Youth Choir travels for a fun and meaningful week of singing, serving and sightseeing. Recent destinations have included New Orleans, San Francisco, Denver and Boston.

Wednesdays

Watershed

During the school year, youth gather for Watershed, a time of Bible study Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 in the Youth Center. Dinner for the whole family is offered at 5 p.m. in Community Hall.

Camps & Retreats

Fall & Spring: Retreats

Once each fall and spring, WSM spends a weekend together at a nearby encampment or retreat facility for fun, bonding and a concentrated study of a particular topic. The group generally travels by bus, leaving Friday evening and returning Sunday afternoon.

Summer: Youth Camp

Every summer the youth group travels by bus for a week of worship, study and fun. It’s a tradition known by students and sponsors — many of whom are former Wilshire youth — as “The Best Week of the Year.”
