2021 MLK Day of Service. 

Wilshire’s annual MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 18, 9:30-noon, will continue this year with a variety of opportunities for individuals and families to safely serve in accordance with our COVID-19 protocols. We will host one mission effort on site at the church and partner with other agencies around the city to provide for small group opportunities. Please read the details for each opportunity carefully as start times may vary and some assignments require additional paperwork. Opportunities to Serve

  • Hygiene Kit Assembly at Wilshire. Outdoor assembly of kits for our unhoused neighbors.
  • Meals on Wheels. Wilshire is committed to cover 10 delivery routes.
  • Pleasant Grove Elementary School. Grounds cleanup and planting and spreading mulch.
  • For the Love of the Lake. White Rock Lake cleanup.
  • Mission Oak Cliff. Food pantry reorganization.
  • Dan D. Rogers Elementary. Garden cleanup.

Donation Opportunity: Hygiene Items Needed by Jan. 15: All are encouraged to donate hygiene items that will be used to create 250 hygiene kits at Wilshire on MLK Day. Items may be dropped off in the collection bin in the south parking lot outside the main office doors on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays until Jan. 15. Items needed are listed below:

  • Hand/body wipes
  • Deodorant (travel size)
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste (travel size)
  • Lip balm
  • Lotion (travel size)
  • Comb
  • Tissues (travel size)
  • Gloves
  • Handwarmers
  • Sunscreen
  • Band-Aids (travel size)
  • Warm socks
  • Protein snacks
  • Notes of encouragement

Fourth annual MLK Teach-In, Saturday, January 16, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. virtual/online/Facebook Live/YouTube. This teach-in will revisit how Dr. King’s theology and politics intersected and offer training on activism beyond the streets. Join us for a day of engagement on the legacy of Dr. King’s legacy of politics and protest undergirded by his faith. This teach-in will also offer training on how to engage in movement building strategies for a better America. Find information here.
